This temple complex is located in Trowulan, approximately 13 km to the southeast of the town of Mojokerto. Of highway-Jombang Mojokerto, in the intersection Trowulan, turned east, past the pool and temple Bajangratu Segaran located to the left of the road. Rat Temple which had been buried in the ground originally discovered back in 1914. Excavation site is done by the regents report Mojokerto, RAA Kromojoyo Adinegoro, about the discovery of a miniature temple in a cemetery of the people. Thorough restoration done in 1984 and 1985. The name 'Rat' is a term used only the local community. It is said that, when discovered, where the temple is located is a rat's nest.
Has not obtained written resources that clearly explain about when, why, and by whom the Rat Temple was built. However, with the miniature temple tower is expected to be built between the 13th century up to the M-14, as a miniature tower is characteristic architecture of that period.
Candi Tikus shape that resembles an petirtaan invite debate among experts about the history and archeology function. Some experts argue that this temple is petirtaan, where the royal family bath, but some experts have argued that the building is a shelter and distribution of water for residents Trowulan. However, Meru shaped tower raises suspicion that this temple also serves as a place of worship.
Rat Temple building resembles a petirtaan or baths, a pool with a few buildings in it. Most of the buildings or rectangular with a size of 29.5 mx 28.25 m was made of red brick. What is interesting, which is located about 3.5 m lower than the surrounding ground level. At the top surface are about 75 cm wide corridor that surrounds the building. In the inside, down about 1 m, there is a wider corridor surrounds the edge of the pond. The entrance to the temple is located on the north side, a 3.5 m wide staircase leading to the bottom of the pool.
On the left and right foot of the stairs there is a rectangular pool measuring 3.5 mx 2 m with a depth of 1.5 m. On the outer wall of each pond lined three lotus-shaped shower (lotus) made of stones.
Right facing stairs, just inside the south side, there is a rectangular building with a size of 7.65 mx 7.65 m. On top of the building there is a 'tower' of about 2 m tall with Meru-shaped roof with a flat top. Tower located in the center of the building is surrounded by a kind of tower 8 smaller. Around the 17 foot wall lined shower building (jaladwara) and makara-shaped lotus flower.
Another interesting point is that there are two types of bricks of different sizes are used in the construction of this temple. Foot of the temple consists of a large red brick covered with red bricks smaller. In addition to the foot of the building, the water contained in the shower even this temple there are two types, which are made of brick and stone made from andesite.
Differences in the use of building materials that suggests that Rat Temple was built through the phases. In the first phase of construction of the temple's foot used large red brick, while the second stage is used in smaller red brick. In other words, the red brick that is larger is older than the age of the smaller. Fountain made of red bricks in the first phase is expected to be made, because its still stiff. Shower of andesite finer carvings made in the second phase is expected. However, it is not known exactly when the second phase of construction is carried out. [1].
